I love me some three-day weekends! It started with the Solider Field 10 Miler, I didn’t have as good a run as I did last year, but I wasn’t well prepared so it was not surprising. It has been awhile since I ran a race so it was fun to get back out there. The weather was perfect for a run, the skies threatened rain but it went right by us. The start was slow, they started each coral of runners about a minute apart. I didn’t see a huge improvement in the congestion, at least none worth waiting 35 minutes to cross the start line. Still a good course, fun to run out onto Soldier Field, and a great start to the long holiday weekend. My Garmin got way out of whack during the race, at about mile 5 it got almost a mile off. By the end it was almost 3 miles off. I need to learn how to re-calibrate it this weekend. The long run at least earned me some good eats.
While I was running, my husband was busy smoking a brisket. The best one yet! I made chicken thighs marinated in a Carolina mustard BBQ sauce. A first for a mustard BBQ sauce and a first for thighs on the grill, it was outstanding. Pot luck style is the way to go for a tasty feast, salad with huge berries and Feta, homemade beans with shredded pork tenderloin (dare I say, even better than bacon), and mustard-y potato salad. Happy belly!
Breakfast made me just as happy. Eggs with Swiss chard from the garden, and of course some strong coffee…
Wouldn’t be Memorial Day without my favorite parade…
Sadly, the parade was kind of lame this year. It was the s-l-o-w-e-s-t parade ever. I felt bad for the marchers, they kept stopping the flow of of the parade. The heat made it even worse. Still a good parade despite all that. I spent the rest of the day reading a good summer book on the front porch while the boys were at the movies and my daughter was at the pool. The air was hot, but the breeze kept it bearable. Pure summer!
Cheers to all the veterans, especially my dad…
I ended my holiday much like that! a wonderfully relaxing weekend. The extra day is always a bonus.
Congratulations on your 10 miler! Sounds like a fun race. Any luck calibrating your Garmin?
Your kids are adorable. The weather looks gorgeous. It was here too, like summer. Parades were never my cup of tea, but my son loves them and it’s fun watching them through his big wide eyes full of excitement. Glad you had a nice long weekend.
Thanks Aimee! I think I got my Garmin re-calibrated. We shall see on the next run. But my avg pace is still wrong, it shows faster. Guess I don’t understand the difference between avg pace and avg moving pace.
Congrats on the run!! I love your cute patriotic plate! Looks some good food!
Thanks Jane!
Nice way to start the weekend! The food looked awesome, those beans look amazing and I am definitely trying the sauce and some chicken thighs, num!
Congrats on the run and it looks like you had a great holiday weekend. I’m drooling over that smoked brisket!
Congrats on the race! Awesome! I’ve tried and tried to get into running, but I have to admit that I really do hate it — give me kickboxing, push ups and planks any day! 🙂
