Why did McDonald’s have to go messing with a good thing? The Shamrock Shake was perfect as it was, the whipped cream and cherry don’t do anything to improve it. The fact that they are no longer premixed but instead combined in the cup leaving them ribboned with green food dye streaks. Don’t get me started on the clear plastic cups either. First world problem, anyone? Yea yea. But hey I want 100% satisfaction if I am going to partake in this yearly calorie and fat laden tradition. McD’s please bring back the classic shake in the waxy white cup! In the meantime I’ll settle for this home-made alternative.
My daughter asked if I could make Shamrock shakes, when I agreed my son quickly pointed out to me that I could not possibly make the shakes because we did not have whipped cream. What? What? I needed to set this right. The at home version is easy peasy – milk, vanilla ice cream, and a handful of Creme de Menthe Hershey Kisses. Whiz it up into a shake and enjoy.
Mustache optional. Happy leprechauns in our house.
- 4 scoops of vanilla ice cream (low-fat)
- 1/4 C milk
- 16 Hershey Creme de Menthe Kisses (Andes Thins work too)
- Blend all ingredients with a blender.
- Makes 2 small shakes.
If you want to make it boozy for the adults add 1 shot vanilla vodka, 1 shot white chocolate liqueur, 1/2 shot Creme de Menthe. I’m good with either option, they both are delicious and have the flavor of the classic Shamrock Shake flavor I crave. No cherry. No whipped cream. No waxy cup either, 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. Now I can concentrate on real world problems.

Awesome! I think the boozy version sounds good 🙂
The boozy one is delicious!
Just found your blog through the Chicago Running Bloggers site! Thanks for sharing this recipe, I had my first-ever Shamrock Shake this past weekend and really liked it. Now I’m looking forward to being able to duplicate it at home year-round! Not to mention that I prefer my desserts WITHOUT food dye, and this recipe seems much more “natural.” =)
Hi Emily – THanks for popping over!
I had one on a road trip back from up North. I miss the wax paper cup version as well. That guys looks GOOD with a stache. LOVE it!
Jill I thought of you when we made me the Kiss version, I owe you thanks for introducing those to me.
My husband gets a shake at least once a year – along with the McRib, which I still can’t stand.
I’ll have mine boozy please! 😀
On the old WW points I think a small is 23 pts. I went years without this treat becuase that was always in my mind, and it would be th eonly thing I could eat for that day.
I have never had a shamrock shake, but since I am not a mint lover, that’s probably for the best. Love that instant mustache! 😉
I’ve never had a shamrock shake, but I agree, I miss the Old Mcdonalds Shakes-the new ones just don’t cut it.
Your boozy version sounds delicious!
Sounds tasty! My husband hates what McDonald’s has done to fancy up their shakes, too 🙂
