A a new truck has joined the Chicago food truck scene this past week, The Southern Mac & Cheese Truck. Their soul warming offerings hit the streets just in time to fight off the sub-zero temperatures in Chicago. There is no packaged food mix or cheese product to be found. Just the ooey gooey goodness of real cheese and elbow macaroni. Lucky for me I didn’t bring a lunch Friday and they were close to my office. I bundled up and headed out for lunch to give them a try. There was already a long line forming and it was even longer by the time I left, but they get you through it quickly.
I ordered the sun dried tomato and caramelized onion mac and cheese. There were large tender chunks of the sub dried tomato throughout, a pile of caramelized onions, with a creamy white cheddar cheese sauce all topped off with breadcrumbs. You would almost think there was bacon in there too. Delicious! Though I will certainly have to run a few extra miles this weekend to make up for it but I don’t care because it beat the hell out of Subway sub I was planning on eating.
They also offered smoked Gouda, crawfish with andouille sausage, and bacon with blue cheese. The portions size was generous and stayed plenty warm on the walk back to the office. You can follow them on Twitter to see where they will be on a daily basis. I will be tracking them down again that is for sure!
That looks amazing!!!! I wish we had more trucks around here, but we have a few in the summer. Just not the winter, but mac and cheese num!
